Ambulance Licence FAQ

What is a Category C1 licence?

A Category C1 licence will enable you to drive a large goods vehicle (LGV) that weighs between 3.5 tonnes and 7.5 tonnes MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass, the maximum weight including passengers). Ambulances fall under this category.

At Metcalfe’s Driver Training you will be taught by experienced and knowledgeable driving instructors who will work with you, and create a bespoke course based on your current driving experiences.

Do I really need a category C1 licence to drive an ambulance?

Yes you do. The weight of an average ambulance exceeds 3.5 tonne which you cannot drive on an average car licence.

What else do I need to become a paramedic or ECA driver?

In order to gain your Category C1 LGV driver’s license you will need to undertake a LGV medical, for this, your doctor or our doctor fills in form D4.

You will also have to fill in provision entitlement form D2. These forms can be obtained from ANY main post office.

What are the important facts for trainee Paramedic (ECA) C1 drivers?

Nearly all Paramedic and ECAs require that you hold an LGV Class C1 licence to apply to become a Paramedic or ECA ambulance driver.

All drivers who gained a car driving licence any time after January 1997 are only allowed to drive a vehicle that weighs up to 3.5 tonnes that include a maximum of eight passenger seats.

How can I achieve an LGV C1 driving licence?

Getting started on the road to gaining an LGV C1 licence can often seem confusing, Metcalfe’s Driver Training provides full training and support that will help you from step one right through to completion.

Where are you based?

Our courses start from our training facility at Skipton Auction Mart, BD23 1UD. We’re no more than a 40 minute drive if you’re based in West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire & Lancashire. Alternatively, you can catch the train to Skipton and we’ll arrange pick-up to our dedicated training facility.

What’s the step by step guide to gaining your LGV C1 licence?

  1. Obtain D4 pack, fill in provisonal entitlement form, get LGV medical. Once signed off by Doctor send to DVLA with your driving licence in the pack.
  2. Once you have received your licence back from the DVLA and it includes provisional entitlement, you will be able to book an LGV theory test. The LGV theory test requires you to pass both the hazard perception and multiple choice exams.
  3. Once you have passed the theory test you can book a practical driving course and get on your way to holding a full LGV Category C1 licence.

Metcalfe’s Driver Training can provide you with the relevant information and forms prior to starting the journey to becoming a qualified LGV C1 driving licence holder
