What is a cat C licence?

A category C license allows drivers to drive vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, but must not exceed 32 tonnes. Category C license typically covers a vehicle that is classed as a Rigid Truck. How Do I Become A HGV Driver?

At first glance, the road to becoming a LGV / HGV Driver can appear complicated and confusing. Here at Metcalfe’s Driver Training, we can explain the whole process effortlessly.

We can book and manage the whole process from the start; booking your medical and assisting with the D2 application forms for your provisional entitlement – or we can show you the cheapest way for you to do this yourself, saving yourself time and money. Once DVLA have your application and all is in order they will send your drivers license back to you however it will look no different from when you origianlly sent it. You can check your provisional entitlement with this link below.

The Road To Your HGV Licence

Module 1 – Theory

Multiple Choice Test and Hazard Perception Test carried out by the DVSA at an approved test centre.

Whilst waiting for the provisional entitlement to be added to your licence, you can start to practise for your theory tests.

The best material to achieve this can be bought from the app store on your iPhone or iPad – and we suggest you use the DVSA’s own practice app this costs £12.99 and is the cheapest possible way to practise all your theory-based tests.

CPC Part 1A Multiple Choice Test. 100 multiple-choice questions. You need to answer 85 correctly to pass.

CPC Part 1B Hazard Perception Test. It consists of 19 video clips with 20 scorable hazards (1 video has 2 hazards); each hazard is scored from 0 to 5, so 100 points are available. Therefore, to pass, you need to score 67 out of 100.

Module 2 – CPC Case Studies

Case Studies. This part of the CPC is usually completed simultaneously with Module 1.

CPC Part 2 Case Studies Test. The test comprises seven case studies that you go through on a computer. The case studies are short stories based on circumstances you may encounter in your job. You’ll be asked between 6 and 8 multiple-choice questions on each case study. The pass mark is 40 out of a possible 50.

Module 3 – Driving

Practical. Consists of 2 parts. Part 3A Reversing Exercise. Part 3B On Road Driving

Once you have successfully passed your CPC Part 1 Theory, you can book your Mod Part 3A.

This consists of: An S-shaped reverse manoeuvre into a bay represented by a coned area whilst backing up to a barrier that replicates the edge of a loading bay.

We have our own off-road reversing area, and this part of the test is done in house with our own highly qualified examiners.

If you are taking your Class 1 / C+E LGV, you will also be asked to demonstrate coupling and uncoupling a trailer as well.

Part 3B – On-road driving with a DVSA Examiner consists of 2 parts

1 hour of practical road driving, including 10 minutes of independent driving.

Module 4 – Practical

Practical. A test on your knowledge of your vehicle. Your ability to do vehicle and contraband checks.

This test is conducted at our training facility and lasts for 30 minutes. On the day, you will receive 2 1/2 of training covering such areas as:

Walk around checks
Ability to prevent physical risks
Border crossings
Load dynamics
How to assess emergencies
Security

To pass, you must achieve a score of at least 15 out of 20 in each area for a total mark of at least 80%.

What is Driver CPC?

The Driver CPC is a qualification that all professional lorry, bus, and coach drivers must have to be able to drive for a living. It was created to improve road safety and uphold high levels of driving. This must be maintained by attending 35 hours of training every five years or the certificate will lapse.

What does driver CPC stand for?

The term ‘Driver CPC’ stands for ‘Certificate of Professional Competence’. The Driver CPC is a qualification that all professional lorry, bus, and coach drivers must possess to be able to drive for a living. The Driver CPC was introduced in 2008 as part of an EU directive, to improve road safety and standards of professional driving.

How long does driver CPC last?

Your Driver CPC certificate, which certifies your experience and competence in road transport, is valid for five years. To maintain your Driver CPC, you must complete 35 hours of training by the end of your five-year term. Your card displays the deadline for completing your education.

How long to train as an HGV driver?

To become a fully qualified HGV driver usually takes around 5-6 weeks. This includes completing both theory and practical training. However, the time it takes to complete your training may vary depending on the length of time it takes your licence to come back from the DVLA with the provisional entitlement.

Our courses start from our training facility at Skipton Auction Mart, BD23 1UD. We’re no more than a 40 minute drive if you’re based in West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire & Lancashire. Alternatively, you can catch the train to Skipton and we’ll arrange pick-up to our dedicated training facility.
